Babble – a social media platform for young carers

by Antonia

Team V is now moving on to a new campaign about young carers. According to Barnardo’s, young carers are children who help look after a member of the family who is sick, disabled or has mental health problems, or is misusing drugs or alcohol. There are approximately 178,000 young carers in England and Wales alone, a number that has increased significantly since 2001.

Young carers often face isolation and bullying. They do not have the time to hang out with their friends due to the overwhelming burden of responsibilities that lies on their shoulders. Carers Trust decided to tackle this issue by creating an online community exclusively for young carers – a virtual place where they can discuss with others and meet people with similar worries and problems. Users can post their own thoughts, stories, videos and photos. Other users can ‘like’ and ‘comment’ like they would do on Facebook.
